WHO Code--Who cares?

Now just hear me out...

Raise your hand if you know what the WHO Code is.

Yea that's what I thought. Many of you don't. But it's ok. I didn't either. But why would I? I try to educate myself about many things but no matter how much research I do, I'm never going to know everything, nor will I claim to.

Most of the new things I decide to delve into and learn about are because of someone I meet, or a conversation I get into or whatnot. So I first heard about the World Health Organization (or WHO) and their stance on breastfeeding when I was watching Shari Crisos Simply Breastfeeding DVD. World Health Organization--Which to me sounds like the CDC or the AAP or whatever other organization that is in charge of regulating and informing the public on their expertise. To my knowledge, there's no official enforcement for violating the Code. Though from my understanding, the La Leche League won't accept money from Code violators, and many Code supporters boycott violators.

Personally, I don't see any of these organizations as an all-being higher power I must obey, I see their recommendations as just that--Recommendations.

So when Bravado announced they were acquired by Medela, and WHO code supporters got all upset debating whether or not they should still buy/sell Bravado bras, or support Bravado at all, I scratched my head a little. Maybe I'm a little naive, but it seems like some companies which wear the scarlet letter "VIOLATOR" aren't really that bad.

I know this is old news but I'm still trying to find out why people would stop supporting Bravado which is obviously a company that supports breastfeeding. Why would anyone else want to buy nursing bras? Their business depends on women breastfeeding. Are people worried about the company changing their values?

I'm not going to pretend to be a WHO Code expert because I'm not, but I have read it, (you can too here) and I do know companies are considered WHO code violators for things like giving away free formula (and I get that). Or for advertising the sale of bottles (but I don't get that). Or by being owned by a company that markets the sale of bottles--like Bravado being owned by Medela.

As a full time working mother and first generation breastfeeder I just wanted to SURVIVE breastfeeding. I wanted to last three months, my maternity leave, and pump enough to last a few more months when I went back to work. Reading these debates from breastfeeding advocates made me question my own position on the matter. So I did more research.

From my understanding Medela is one of the most popular brand of breast pumps out there, if not the most popular. I don't have one, but it seems like everyone else I know who pumps, does. But why are they considered WHO Code violators exactly?

I read this blog article, which was very detailed about Medela, and how they're "continually thumbed their nose at the WHO Code" and how they "...even have a statement on their website acknowledging their violation of the Code and taking the position that they will continue to do so for the foreseeable future."

She says they're violating the Code by the way they market their bottles and nipples.

Luckily she left a link to the statement, and I followed it, downloaded it and read it myself and you can too. Long story short, Medela claims to market their bottles because they were getting 100 calls/emails a day after the "2008 BPA scare" with moms asking if their bottles carried BPA. They claim by marketing their products a BPA free more women would be able to buy their products with confidence saying: "We believe it is our obligation to inform mothers that our breast pump systems, including bottles and teats, are safe. Many mothers are not aware that Medela offers a complete breastmilk feeding system, as we have not marketed this information in the past."

They go on to say they've never declared themselves as WHO Code violators and that they believe they support the intent of the Code.

Do you buy that? Well, I think every mother can decide for herself.

Now my question is should Code supporters fight fire with fire? Counter-advertise specific breastfeeding products? Go all political crazy on them and do a smear campaign on formula? But where do you get the funding for such a movement? Or could they amend the WHO Code a little, join together with companies that claim to be supporting breastfeeding, use their money, and work together to promote breastfeeding benefits while crushing the formula companies trying to discourage them?

As for me, I'm not trying to say "eff the WHO Code," or anything of that sort, because I know it serves a huge, huge world purpose to encourage mothers everywhere to breastfeed their babies. Supporters are doing their part to knock down formula companies, their heavy push to advertise to mothers who don't know any better and support companies that help breastfeeding moms.

All I'm trying to say is there are other companies who may not exactly be WHO Code compliant, but they are still doing a gosh darn good job of getting people like me to start, and continue to breastfeed.

Do you know what the number one reason I wanted to breastfeed was? Money.

I knew formula would cost me and my family hundreds of dollars a month and I didn't want to pay it. Some may be smug reading that fact, but you know what? It got me started. It committed me to trying.

Then I got hired as a writer for Bravado Designs. An awesome organization priding itself in the support of breastfeeding moms. This gig got me connected with a lactation consultant (my editor in chief) and gave me a built-in community cheering me on in my journey. Weekly I had to reevaluate why I was doing this, while learning more benefits, in addition to savings.

Before having my daughter I lobbied like crazy in a belly photo contest and won an Avent Double Electric Pump, and a Simplisse manual pump I use on occasion. These two babies are the main reasons my baby has been breastfeed as long as she has.--Not to discredit my extreme determination.

So Avent advertises their bottles are BPA free, and has some buy-one-get-one deals. Big woop. The milk had to go somewhere right? I wonder if their marketing for selling bottles to go with a breast pump is getting more women to pump and breastfeed, or discouraging more women from doing that? I can only speak for myself.

I'm sure there are other, and even better ways you can sell your product without having to market your bottles, or become Code violators, but let's just think about this for a second--Is the average every day woman who's looking for a breast pump familiar with such a code and up to date on the controversy? I don't think so. I think she's just trying to find a place to express her milk and trying to find one that's safe for her baby. If they don't advertise to her who will? We know the formula companies will.

When my breast pump broke several months ago I called Avent and told them how I work full time and needed this to pump milk for my baby. They didn't ask for my warranty information, or if I had done something to it. They sent me a replacement right away, no questions asked. They may not be up to the World Health Organization's standards but they've exceeded my expectations.

Maybe it's because I'm not a staunch advocate for breastfeeding that I'm not more upset about this merger. Or maybe it's because I don't know the full back story, or the extent to how Medela or other companies my be harming mother and babies. I don't know. But I'm not convinced this is the big deal many is making it seem (but I'm open minded to hear if I'm missing something).

I don't think I have a definite stance one way or another. I think more people should know about the World Health Organization and the good they're trying to do. I think every mom can read the code, see the ads by formula, pump, and bottle companies and decide for themselves what they think about it.
I do think it's important to stand behind an organization that's trying to regulate good products to get more women to breastfeed, but I also think it's important to stand behind other organizations that are trying to help women breastfeed, period. Does it matter what brand?

And if there's some underground movement Medela and other WHO Code violators have to get women to stop breastfeeding please tell me, and I'll see where you're coming from.

**Update** Someone on Twitter linked me to this excellent article about why Medela is considered a WHO Code violator. She states her opinion on why she thinks it's wrong but overall it seems very fair.*

Shirtless Babies: He Says/ She Says

He says: "Where’s her shirt? She's not a newborn, she should have a shirt on in these pictures."
She says: "She's a cute chunky baby, and she’s got at least a year before this is considered inappropriate."

What say you?

DIY Hair Bow Holder: What I'm Makin' Monday

This one is going to be easy. I've been wanting to make an organizer for Lil' J's hair bows for a while. Last week I made a headband organizer and this week I made something for her clippes. She has tons and tons of clippies and before today, I had them all in a bucket I had to dump out all to find the color I want and matching sets. I posted on my facebook page a few weeks ago that I needed a clippie organizer and someone told me to use a picture frame and ribbon. So I googled the idea and found this.

But in true thrifty style, instead of buying one I decided to make my own.
I hadn't made anything else this week and I needed a "Makin' Monday" for the week, so I literally made this during my dinner break last night in less than 15 minutes. I'll probably go back and make it more sturdy but for now this is how I did it (and by the way obviously, I didn't invent this, I just hadn't seen it until someone else pointed it out to me, so maybe this will be helpful to someone else!)

What you'll need:
She was across the room and came running crawling when I started snapping pictures of the materials. I had to choose this one.
A picture frame
Decorative fabric
Ribbon
Scissors
Tape or glue

Step 1. Cut several strips of ribbon the length or of the picture frame.

Step 2. Cut the fabric to the size of the picture frame opening.

Step 3. Place the ribbon inside the back of the picture frame and tape the ends.

Step 4. Place the fabric over top and the picture frame backing over that and tape the back down.

TADA!!

What do you think? The only bad thing is after putting about 2/3rds of Li' J's hair bows on this thing I realized we're not going to have enough room. I'll have to make another one soon, but I'll probably get the next frame from Goodwill or something because you don't need anything super nice.

Did you make anything this week, food craft or anything? I'd love to see! Link up! And let others know about the party!

365 Love Letters Week 16

Ugh! I love my baby so much. Every day in these love letters I get writers block and can only think of saying what I tell her every day several times a day "I love you I love you I love you!" I know she loves me too and sometimes that's what gets me through the day.

I tried to be more creative this week with taking photos. I took some indoors, some outdoors, and played around with the editing more this week. I've been processing these differently. I used to take [dozens, then choose] a photo a day and write and edit it that night. But lately I've been taking the [dozens of] photos each day, and choosing a daily favorite at the end of the week, then writing them all together. This next week I'm going to try to go back to the old way and upload them each day on my facebook page each night. There's something special about completing one each day.

My favorite this week is probably Day 112. By habit I'm normally trying to get her whole little body in frame but with this shot I zoomed in to get her little hand going for a dandelion and I loved the way it came out. I took two quick shots and the one before you can see more of her hat, but I liked this one more, which focused more on her hand. My advice to her came naturally after editing this photo.

Thanks again for letting me share these with you. There's another Etsy find and giveaway at the end of this post! :) Happy Easter! From me and my little bunny. PS: 3 photos don't seem to be appearing via some browsers. I'll try to fox it in the morning but I promise all 7 are here! :)

I don't know a ton about "Green" stuff but...

There's a commercial that airs on my news station all the time that goes "we were green before green was cool." It's a slogan by a pest and lawn care company that uses environmentally friendly products for their services.

I must have heard that a thousand times before I stopped to think about it. "Before green was cool."

Aint that the truth. I thought as I mouthed the phrase I knew was coming.

If anything is trendy right now like no other it's green products.

I'm bombarded with mom emails every morning issuing me a new warning about some product I use that's harmful to my baby and has links to cancer.--Air fresheners, glass cleaners, bleach, cell phones. I might as well move to a bubble and eat dirt.

These emails almost always offer up a green alternative which makes me scratch my head and wonder if that green alternative is the one sponsoring this mass email to scare me.

Well I'll show them. Instead of buying the toxic-free air freshener, I'll just let my house stink. And instead of washing my counters with that natural cleaner...Well, I just won't wash my counters.

Yes, ladies and gentle men, my plan is to just live in filth instead of fear.
Organic Cotton Girls Top from My Natural Baby Boutique
When I told my husband of my plan to stop cleaning, of course he had a smart aleck response.

"So, what's new? I do all of the cleaning."

So my plan to rebel against the toxic clean companies, and their expensive alleged "green" counterparts was short lived. But I haven't given up. I do want to be greener. To live greener, and feel like I'm making a difference. But I also don't want to feel ripped off.

Something that comes from the earth should be cheaper than something that's processed--At least in my mind. I know things that are processed are more often mass-produced, and more likely to cost less to make (at least that's what I hear) but there's gotta be other ways to be thrifty AND green right?

For one, I'm thinking of using vinegar to clean with. I dunno, I hear it gets the job done. I'm not sure what I think of my whole house smelling like vinegar but I imagine it'll be better than the smell of not cleaning. It's worth a try. Until we find out vinegar also has a link to cancer.

I'm also of thinking of joining a community garden. My town has dozens of community gardens and there's a couple right around my house. Organic food can be pricey, but if I grow my own it can be way cheap. I'm talking tomato seeds for like 10 cents. Renting a plot is only like $30 a year or less depending which you plant at. And this way I don't have to dig up my own yard... The plots are already there!
Organic Cotton Pants with Skirt from My Natural Baby Boutique
The only downside is well... The work, and the fact that I've never been able to keep my potted plants alive so umm... This could wind up being a disaster, but it could also be a good learning experience. I'll definitely take a free class before trying. And I'll bring the whole family out. It'll be a good lesson for all of us. Plus Lil' J already likes to eat dirt. She's green.

I doubt I'll ever decide to grow cotton (it just don't seem right in my mind). But apparently non-organic cotton uses lots of cancer-linked pesticides (surprise, surprise!). I'd think it's not the end of the world since you wash your clothes, and you're wearing them, not eating them, but don't quote me on that. If you're still worried, stores like My Natural Baby Boutique make clothes with 100% organic cotton. That's where these cute Earthy-looking clothes are from.
And finally, I'm all about recycling. ALL a-bout-it!! I'm not the best about recycling my own trash (YET)--I'm working on that. But I am saving all of Lil' J's clothes. I don't plan to throw any away. It'll all be donated, used for my next child, or sold. I am also good about buying recycled products. Like clothes for Lil 'J. A good portion of them are second hand. Betcha didn't know that! Yea! I get a lot of her stuff off eBay, and a few things from thrift stores. I even have found some cool etsy shops that up-cycle their clothes. Meaning, taking fabric from an old-something, and turning it into a new-something. Like this skirt from Wendy Miracle and this adorable hair bow from Little Smash:
Upcycled Skirt from Wendy Miracle; Upcycled Bow from Little Smash; Bubble top from HEB
Recycled toilet paper is another way to go. No... It's not what you think. We use cloth wipes for Lil' J but not for us. Recycled toilet paper as in White Cloud Green Earth brand. Like up-cycled clothes, this stuff is made of 100% recycled material, which saves millions of trees. Kruger, the company behind White Cloud Green Earth is also using green energy to run it's factories.

So maybe I am jumping on the "green is cool" bandwagon, but really, is it that bad of a club to be in? Even if we do find out that it's all a hoax next year, or that it's already too late, we're gonna die--At least we gave it a try, and it's a well-meaning club to be in.

Thanks for making it to the bottom of my ramblings in this post. If you've survived, congratulations, now it's time for some freebies...
You can buy Green Earth TP or paper towels and get 50% more right now. You can also use this coupon to get another $1.50 off. If you like free money, join their twitter party tomorrow where they'll be giving away Walmart gift cards from 1-2pm CST. Use hashtag #earthday and #green to party.

When the Today Show calls...

I glanced down at my phone and noticed I had a new message. When I opened my inbox I saw a peculiar subject line. "NBC Today Show."

Hmm. That's funny. Well it got even funnier when I opened it up and read that they were doing a story about sharing information when pregnant for the next morning's show, and wanted to talk to me about it.

Interesting.

I called the number the producer left for me and chatted with her for a few moments, and she asked if I'd be willing to fly to New York City to be on the Today Show the next morning. It would be on their dime of course, and they'd fly me and someone else out (probably my husband, unless I decided to ditch him and bring a friend.). I told them I had work the next day but they said I'd be done by 8 and able to make it to work that morning.

"Sure!" I went with it.

Interestingly enough a similar situation happened just a few months earlier. The NBC Nightly News wrote to me about being in a segment about written love letters. Everything crumbled and fell through at the last moment because of some breaking news, but I hey, that's the business. I live it every day, I get it!

I was extremely excited to see this new message but hesitant, not wanting to get my hopes up. I only told one friend about the possibility before the producer called me back.

It took her too long to get to the point so I knew it wasn't going to happen. "My producer is telling me we're set for the live part of the show," she told me. Awww man!! I thought. "But we'd still like to come to your house and talk to you for our story portion." Sweet!

I still tried not to get too excited. I needed to run this by a few people above me at work, to make sure they were ok with me blasting myself all over national television, then clean my house, and oh yea, tell my husband the Today Show was coming over.

I basically waited until I had everything cleared and the photographer on his way before telling my husband. I called as I left for work.

"Hi honey, how's it going?" I tried to warm him up with small talk before dropping the bomb. "So remember how NBC Nightly News called me awhile back?"

"Oh no," he interrupted me.

"Oh no?" I shot back, deciding that over-excitement would be my defense and hoping his guilt for bursting my bubble would counter any distaste he had for the idea. "This is exciting, why can't you be happy for me?"

I heard him sigh. It was starting to work.

"When are they coming over?" he asked.

"Seven," I lied. They would be there at six, but it was seven eastern time, and we'd probably start filming by seven after all the set up.

"Seven?" he freaked. "We need to clean up this house."

"Well get started, I'm on my way home and I'll help."

"I have to be at church at seven," he said. I knew this already and I had already arranged for a friend to come over and help watch Little J while I was being interviewed.

When I got home he was doing the dishes, and scrubbing glasses, which annoyed me a little. The camera wouldn't be pointed at the dishes or our sink. I took the liberty of picking everything up that was out of place and throwing it in our hall closet, and our bedroom. I knew we'd most likely film in the living room or nursery, but the crap would be hidden in our room.

My daughter didn't want to be put down so I cleaned while holding her, and she laughed as we ran up and down the stairs throwing things in strange places. I laughed at the irony that one day I'll probably be telling her NOT to do this, when here I was doing that very thing many moms hate. Shoving things out of the way instead of putting them where they belong.

I managed to get everything hidden put away, and changed my and my daughter's clothes just in time.

Meanwhile  I told another friend I was probably going to be on the Today Show the next morning and that she should watch for me.

Right at six o'clock there was a knock at the door. I hoped it was my friend, but it was the punctual photographer.

I let him in and showed him my living-room so he could set up while I finished touching up my makeup. He recognized me from my local station and we talked a little about mutual friends. My nerves started to settle as I got to know him.

The producer I spoke with earlier had written down my answers and basically already knew what she wanted me to say based on my responses from earlier. The question were based around TMI, what's TMI and do I consider my blog TMI.

Honestly after I got pregnant I think my blog turned away from the TMI tone. I mean, pre-pregnancy was a little much. Saying you're "trying" is practically saying "Guess what? We're doing it all the time in hopes to spawn." It can seem a little TMI. But the pregnancy part? I didn't really think that was inappropriate.

The story was born after Mariah Carey tweeted a picture of her decorated pregnant belly, and a popular website deemed the youtube pregnancy documentation phenomenon as "WombTube." So the Today Show ran with it and found me.

When it was time for me to sit down, sit still and answer questions I found it so odd being on the other side of things. I worried I'd sound stupid, I looked around behind me to see what items were out of place and tried to straighten up things that would make my house look messy. I vowed to never again say "Don't worry about it" when someone I interviewed in the future tried to straighten up their place. I now know how they feel.

After the interview the photographer got some shots of my daughter and I playing. This was what I was most excited about. The world seeing my beautiful baby--In hopes of one of those people being a casting agent for Baby Gap (wink).

The first set up didn't go so well. He told me to put her in her crib and act like I was walking in to get her. Well, she knew it wasn't bed time, and I had gotten home from work not long before, and she wasn't even close to being ready for me to leave her alone. So every time I set her down she'd scream as I'd walk away. I'd walk in, and pick her up, and she'd be ok. We did that about four times. I'm glad they didn't use that video on TV because it wasn't very cute.

Then we sat on the bed in her nursery and I read her a book. She was more fascinated with my necklace and my boobs than the book, so I'm glad that footage also didn't make the cut.

The photographer went back downstairs to adjust some lights before we set up for the last scene--Playing with blocks. I fed her while he went downstairs which is why she was especially happy for this scene, and why this one made air.

We played with blocks and she grabbed my headband off my wrist and started playing with that. While she's used to having a camera in her face, she wasn't familiar with the person behind this one, but she still did a fabulous job. I was able to sit her down to play while I typed on my computer. I tried my best to get my blog name in the story but I only saw it once for half a second. Ahh, oh well.

I set my DVR that night and anxiously awaited the show. I still didn't believe it would air. I figured some breaking news or bigger story would make them cancel the whole thing. But somewhere after the first commercial I noticed a tease for the story. "Are women sharing too much information online?"

YAAAAY! I wanted to scream, but my excitement was stumped a little with my husband standing over my shoulder.

I checked facebook and some of my east coast friends told me they had seen the segment. Now I knew we had made the cut, and I just had to wait to see it.

When it finally came on I held my breath. Lil' J was in my lap and my husband came in to watch it with me.

Meridith Vieria read the intro to the story that ended something like "but has it gone too far?" and I gulped.

"So the Today Show decides to do a story on TMI and you're at the top of the list," my husband said. "That's great."

Sarcasm. Wonderful. I paused the TV.

"Are you going to add your commentary the entire time?" I shot back.

"Yes," he said. I had to laugh because his remark was funny, but I was a little worried about what else they had grabbed from my blog. I knew I'd be ok with it, I put it out there, but my honey is much more conservative than I am in that regard.

Next came my cankle pictures.

"Now the whole world has seen your cankles" he heckled. "I thought you weren't going to post those online."

Oops. Busted.

At the end we watched the other woman who was there for the live interview and I got slightly envious.

"That was suppose to be ME!" I told my husband. But it was ok, at least this way Lil' J got to be in the story with me. And I didn't have to punch out that so called "expert" who said women are sharing too much information.

As you can probably gauge from my recap, my husband completely agrees with said "expert" some things--like pregnancy experiences should be kept private and to yourself. My argument is that I never asked for a huge audience. I began my blog as a way to write about my thoughts and experiences. The fact that it picked up and subscribed to by thousands was not expected. But I stand by what I said. I've learned a lot through this. I've learned about a whole new world of birth and living. I had never heard of a "granola mom" before starting my blog and some people may consider me one of sorts.

It goes the other way too. I've received countless wonderful emails from readers who tell me I've helped them in some way. How awesome is that?

And on top of all of that I'll have this fun documentation to share with my daughter, which may or may not have lasted long had I not had support and feedback from followers.

In my opinion, having my own personal space to blog about this specific topic isn't giving out too much information. If you don't like it, you don't have to read it. And if you're my friend on facebook you know that I was not blasting out pregnancy updates as my status throughout my pregnancy. I hardly updated pregnancy photos there. I can see how in that outlet people can be hit with information they don't want to see but on a blog?--You've gotta be seeking that out yourself.

So, 63% of people on the Today Show poll say sharing your pregnancy online is TMI. I live with one of those people who fall into that category of votes. To that I shrug and say "oh well." If you don't like it, don't read it. I'm not giving out my address, or personal information that could be potentially hurtful.

I read comments on the show's facebook page under that posted link and read some rude remarks about Mariah Carey, and other celebrities. Luckily none seem directed toward me.--Lucky for commenters that is.

Pregnancy is an exciting time. It's such a short experience, and it only happens once, twice or three times in a lifetime (sometimes more or less). I say live it to the fullest, no matter what that means to you. And with the way technology and social media is going, it's not wonder people are sharing. I know I've made "virtual friends" who feel like family, and I love sharing good news with them. Why would it be any different for others? Even celebrities. I don't know what it's like to be famous and pregnant. I can imagine they feel just as excited as I do and want to share it with the world.

I could go on and on but I'll spare you. It made me think of today's 365 advice though.
Kai-Cream and socks c/o See Kai Run
... And it would be hard to walk a mile in her shoes cause they are so small. Or mine cause they are so big. Or Mariah Carey's because they are probably stilettos. Speaking of shoes, if you love these (above) from See Kai Run, as much as we do, read below for a giveaway!

If you missed us on the Today Show, click play below!

I was a proud mama seeing my little one on TV. So happy! Oh, and if you're wondering, her dress in that story is from here.

Everyone who comments on this post before the 30th will be entered to win a pair of shoes of your choice from See Kai Run or Smaller. If you follow them on twitter or facebook or subscribe to my blog, comment again for an extra entry.

DIY Hair Bow Organizer: What I'm Makin Monday

I've been so giddy about this What I'm Makin' Monday since I came up with the idea to make this a few weeks ago. I had been looking for a way to organize my daughter's hair bows. She has dozens and dozens of headbands not including the flowers and clippies that go on them. Until now I'd been tossing them in a bin on her dresser, and while it's somewhat organized, I have to dump the entire bin out to find what I want each day.

I wanted some kind of organizer like a necklace holder. I remembered seeing a jewelry tree before and it clicked... How about I make a headband tree!

I read this tutorial which proved to be slightly helpful, but not totally, because we don't have the same stores here that carried the same supplies (like manzanita tree branches). None of the craft stores I called carried those. I could order some online but I opted to go the hood route and rip a branch one off an unsuspecting tree for Free 99.

So here's what I used:
-Tree branch(es) trimmed down to the size I wanted
-Flower pot
-Craft paint
-Primer (optional)
-Quikrete (cement)

1. After ripping the branch off the tree I brought it inside to dry out a few days. Then I broke the branches off to the sizes I wanted, and sanded them down.

2. I had a little primer left over from a previous project and tried to prime the branches, but it ran out about half way through so I gave up on that idea. I don't think it's crucial... But I'll let you know if my paint starts chipping in a few weeks.

3. I grabbed some copper craft paint I had left over from her mobile project and used it to paint the branches. I did two coats and let it dry.
4. Lil' J and I went to the store to find some kind of mold for this project, but Home Depot said I should go to Michael's for the "plaster" I was asking for. But instead of loading her back in her car seat and across the street and out again I decided to get some quikrete (just add water stuff). The smallest size they had was a 60 pound bag. Luckily it was only $2.13, so I didn't feel so bad. My husband still freaked out wondering why I had a huge bag of concrete in the car and rolled his eyes when I told him it was a craft project.

Anyway...
5. I poured the concrete in the flower pot and stuck the sticks in. I added too much water, poured it out, and let it dry. Then I added a little more to stabilize it more, and left it outside to dry more.
6. When I brought it all inside I touched up some spots I saw I missed painting and let that dry.

7. Add the hair bows, and TADA!!!!

What do you think? Are you impressed? I hope so! This whole project cost me about $6 since I already had the paint. I just got a $3 pot and some concrete and BAM! Fabulous hair bow organizer! It's easy to see and grab which bow I want for the day.

I still have another dozen or so plain-colored headbands still in her bin. I decided I'd just hang the pretty boutique ones on her tree.

*note* I made sure to pick a branch with lots of little twigs coming off so I don't put too many bows on one branch, requiring me to pull several off the same branch to get to one.

365 Love Letters Week 15

What a week! I must say I didn't think my 365 would make it this far, but I'm glad it has! Over 100 days down so far and about 259 days to go... Yikes! Now that I've written so many of these daily love letters I'm forgetting if I've already said some things to her. Some are beginning to feel cliche, and others lacking creativity, but they're all still coming from the same place--My heart. And I don't think she'll mind if some are slightly corny.

The funny thing, I know many people have a hard time remembering to take a photo every day. My problem is I literally take dozens of photos a day. It's impossible which to choose to use for her letter. I usually try to pick one that brings a message to my mind, like day 106. When I saw her beautiful eyes, that saying came to mind.

Snoop made the cut again this week. I was working in the front yard before taking this photo and she and Snoop were watching me. When I came inside they were still staring outside so I snapped this picture. I took a photo of them together the next day too and thought I'd have a special Snoop week but I liked some other photos I took better so maybe next time! I want to try to take some shots of the three or four of us, we don't have any pictures of the whole entire family (including Snoop) yet so maybe that will be a good challenge this week. Shoot, that would have been good for a day 100, oh well.

You're going to love my Etsy find of the week at the bottom too! Take note of day 104.

My favorite this week may be day 101. But I also love 106 even though it's cliche.
Mauve Victorian Flower Headband from Bella Fleur
Spring Flowers Party Dress from Monkey and Friends
Ladybug Clippie from Cutie Patoody 6 for $12; dress from Sumos Sweet Stuff $10
Organic Cotton Girls Top and Bottom with Skirt from My Natural Baby Boutique
Bubble Romper from Sassy Stitches Boutique $26

I just ordered some more of these cute butterfly bows. Cutie Patoody is my Etsy find of the week. I stumbled upon her shop looking for cute hair bows and fell in love with these buggy bows. I just bought lady bugs, more butterflies and bumble bees. She sent me an extra light pink pair of ladybugs for a giveaway! So everyone who comments before the 26th will be entered to win. "Like" her facebook page on facebook and comment here or under this same photo of Lil' J wearing her buggy bow on my facebook page letting me know you did and you'll get an extra entry! I'll draw the winner using random.org.

Today Show Tomorrow (Today)

It took me about 20 years to make my television debut, it only took my daughter 9 months. The Today Show filmed at our house this evening for a segment about TMI (don't ya know I'm the queen of that!).

I'm not used to being the one answering the questions, I'm usually the one asking, them so hopefully I won't sound like an idiot. They did quite a bit of filming, but knowing how television news works, I know they'll cut down quite a bit. So I have no idea what will end up making it to air. I'll tell you more all about it after I see it, I just wanted to give you a heads up tonight!

So if you're awake or have a DVR try to catch us around 7am-ish!

(If you missed it here's the link I'll post my thoughts later!

'Just a Mom'

I was browsing Mormon.org last week and saw my friend on the homepage. I watched her video and smiled and laughed because oh I miss her so, and they portrayed her fun personality just like I remember her in college.

I began to scroll through other "featured Mormon" profiles to see if I recognized anyone else when I spotted Jane Clayson. I watched her video and teared up.

There are so many details of my life I don't go into in public and one of them is my battle with this. I have never wanted being a mother define me. Long before becoming pregnant I said I didn't want to be "just a mom." Since becoming a mother, when I sign up for something that needs a username I try to avoid using the words "mom" or "mama" in the title (aside from blog-related endeavors obviously). It's silly, but I've fought so that's not what defines me. I love being a mother but I guess that's not the first thing I want people to think of when they hear my name or see me. I've feared ever leaving the workforce because I don't want to be a "former news anchor."

Jane Clayson is a former network news anchor and left the business to take care of her children. This was exactly what I needed to hear right now. I sometimes find it hard to picture myself staying at home and being "just a mom" but I've realized I'm thinking about this the wrong way. What a blessing it would be to devote my time to raising my children. What an honorable career.

Hopefully this video can strike a chord with someone like it has for me.

Messy House: He Says/ She Says

He Says: "Did you record 'Hoarders'?"
She Says: "No."
Then He Says: "Good, because that show gives me a headache. I'd rather die than live in a messy house."
Then She Says: "A little dramatic?!" While thinking: 'That can be arranged'

What say you?

PS: No, I don't really want to kill my dramatic husband.

Dried Baby (and Daddy) Snacks: What I'm Makin' Monday

I didn't get a chance to finish my fun crafts this week so I'm sharing some dried snacks I made.
I had some bananas that were turning brown, some apples we needed to eat, and strawberries I wanted to try dried.

Apparently drying fruit is a great way to keep the good vitamins in food, and it's a less-messy snack. So I dusted off my old dehydrator (literally, as you'll see from this photo it needed a little TLC!) I bought as a wedding gift with gift cards but hadn't used in years.
I didn't even remember how much these things are but I just looked it up and they're like $50 on Amazon. Worth it if you like to make your own dried fruit, veggies, jerky, or fruit roll ups!

I sliced all the fruit into small pieces. I peeled some of the apples, but not all, just to see which way I liked it more.
Then I placed them all on the dehydrator trays and set it to about 135 degrees, and left it overnight (about 7-8 hours).
My husband turned it off in the morning and helped himself to some bananas. It was fun and easy to make and Lil' J loved it all too.
(We had just woken up and gone downstairs to go try some for breakfast so don't judge her non-prissy state).

The only thing that kinda sucks about it is that even though I fill up all of the trays with fruit, the yield is so small after it's all dried.
My husband wants me to make a huge batch of bananas soon, so I may try again and see if I can stack the fruit on top of one another.

365 Love Letters Week 14

It's getting harder and harder to be happy with my photographs. The better I get the higher my expectations. I'm not satisfied until I get "the shot" and there are days that doesn't happen.

I just realized today that all of my photos this week have her in them. I try to switch it up sometimes, and I did take some other photos but these were my favorites.
One photo I took this week I LOVED, she's laughing and scrunching her face all up. It's a candid. I didn't edit it or anything because I just love the snapshot in it's raw form capturing her and her sweet personality. I would have used it as a 365 but I loved another photo I captured on day 95 more for the purpose of her book. Here's day 95 runner up :)

And here are the rest of them this week. My favorite is probably day 99 or day 97. She just looked so cute! Snoop also reemerged in photos this week. I need to take more photos of them together. I take quite a bit but most are on my phone (as the one this week was). They really love each other. And as you'll see in another photo this week, she's fearless around animals.

Day 100 is Sunday and I am feeling so much pressure to make it good but I have no idea what I'll do!

There's another etsy find and giveaway of the week at the end of this post! Thanks again for letting me share these with you!
Spring Flower Party Dress from Monkey and Friends Etsy
Flower Peasant Dress from Monkey and Friends
Bunny hat from Mary Sue

Sporty Tam Tam Twozie and Capris from Agoo

Everyone who comments on this post and tells me what they like from Amy's Buttons and Bows before next Monday the 18th will be entered to win a ruffle bloomers and hair bow set. You can comment again if you "like" her on facebook for an extra entry and get an extra entry for every friend you refer to like her page as well. This is a $34 value. Amy will use random.org to draw the winner on the 19th. Good luck!
